Florian Wirtz Struggles to Hit Form at Liverpool Despite Leverkusen Success

Wirtz’s Leverkusen Legacy

Florian Wirtz arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2025 for a reported £116m, a fee that raised expectations to a sky‑high level. In Germany, the 23‑year‑old was the engine behind Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking play, scoring 21 goals and providing 12 assists in the 2024‑25 Bundesliga season. His vision and technical ability made him a favourite among the German national team coaches.

Mixed Performances in the Premier League

Since joining, Wirtz’s output has been uneven. In the Champions League win over LASK, he was a constant threat, exploiting gaps behind the opposition’s defence and linking up with teammates to dominate the game. The 1‑0 victory saw him create several chances, but his goal tally remains nil. In contrast, his outing against Manchester City was less impressive. With key players missing, Liverpool needed creative sparks; Wirtz struggled to find space, wasted chances, and appeared withdrawn when the team chased a 0‑1 deficit. The match ended in a 2‑1 loss, and the criticism from fans grew louder.

Comparisons with Rayan Cherki

Liverpool’s scouting department had also considered Rayan Cherki, a cheaper alternative. Cherki’s goal against City was a highlight, prompting questions about Wirtz’s readiness for the club’s style. While Cherki’s pace and finishing were praised, Wirtz’s lack of impact has led some to wonder if the transfer was premature.

What the Club’s Coaching Staff Are Doing

The head coach and coaching staff are reportedly working closely with Wirtz to integrate him into the team’s tactical setup. They are focusing on his positional awareness and decision‑making under pressure. Early indications suggest that he is adapting to the physicality of the Premier League, but consistency remains the key issue.

Future Outlook

Wirtz’s next season will be crucial. If he can translate his Bundesliga brilliance into Premier League performances, Liverpool will have secured a long‑term creative outlet. If not, the club may need to reconsider his role or explore alternatives.
