Everton humiliate woeful Manchester United 4-0 at Goodison Park
Everton hit four goals at Goodison Park against a woeful Manchester United side that looked clueless for most parts of the match. The win takes the Toffees to seventh spot in the table with 49 points. Manchester United meanwhile are on the sixth spot and the loss to Everton seriously threatens their top 4 ambition. The 20 times champuions could finish the season without qualification for Champions League.
After dominating the match for the first 20 minutes, Everton finally found the back of the net. Richarlison opened the scoring for Everton with an impressive acrobatic volley after a long throw got flicked towards him by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Brazilian almost doubled Everton’s lead a couple of minutes later but his shot from outside the box flew past the left post.
Idrissa Gueye picked a yellow card for a foul on Fred but soon after that incident, the Senegalese midfielder assisted Gylfi Sigurdsson for the second goal. The Icelander’s shot from outside the box beat De Gea and reached the bottom left corner of the goal. Despite picking up a knock, Richarlison looked dangerous and as the first half was nearing it’s end, he tried to score his second with a shot from out side the box that was off-target. Everton went into the first half break 2-0 with United having failed to register a shot on target. The Blues were firmly in control.
Richarlison was substituted around the 50 minute mark after the knock he picked up in the first half made it uncomfortable for the Brazilian to continue and Theo Walcott came on in his place. Man United were pinned back to their own half by Everton and the third goal was coming.
Sigurdsson’s corner was punched by De Gea but the ball reached only Digne whose shot from outside the box flew into the bottom left-corner. In the 64th minute, Walcott extender the Toffees’ lead to four. Amidst a sea of United defenders, Sigurdsson on the left touchline picked Walcott who was making the run. Walcott took a first touch to push the ball four to five yards away and then finished from the left side of the box with De Gea beaten for the fourth time on the day.
Man United were outplayed by Everton and there is no other way of putting it. The Toffees outran their opposition, showed more determination on and off the ball to seal their deserved 4-0 win. Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham fans would love this result as it deals a huge blow to Man United’s top 4 ambition.
