Is Aguero the greatest ever foreign striker in the Premier League?
When the Argentine striker was signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011, it was a statement of intent from Man City, who were yet to win the Premier League in 43 years. Sergio Aguero delivered when it mattered the most with a dramatic last minute goal against QPR in 2011-12 season to win the Premier League title for Man City. That moment alone is enough to establish Aguero as one of Man City’s legends but what he has gone on to do for the club is beyond greatness.
Along with Yaya Toure, Aguero has scored the most important goals for City in the last 8 years. With 228 goals as on 30th of Match 2019, he is the outright leading goal scorer of all times for Manchester City. Aguero has the same number of goals as Thierry Henry who hit 228 goals for Arsenal FC in 375 games. Aguero has matched it in 43 fewer games and it is only a matter of time before he overtakes Henry.
However, Aguero has constantly been over-looked by the English media and the PFA despite his remarkable consistency. With 18 goals and 6 assists in just 26 games, Aguero will easily cross the 20 goal-mark for the sixth time in his Man City career in 8 years. Yet he has never won the PFA player of the Year award and has been named in the PFA Team of the Year just once.
Even this year, the bookmakers have Van Dijk as the favourite ahead of Man City stars Sterling and Aguero. If City go on to win the title and Aguero finishes as the league’s top scorer, Van Dijk picking the PFA Player of the Year award would be criminal because it was Aguero who sparked the Man City victory against Liverpool when the Merseysiders had the chance to go 10 points ahead of City.
With or without the PFA player of the year title, Sergio Aguero with his incredible stats will go down in Premier League history as the greatest ever foreign striker.
