Man City welcomes opening of FFP investigation, supports transparency

In November of last year, German magazine Der Spiegel alleged that Manchester City circumvented FFP regulations that limit how much money owners can put into a club. UEFA announced on Thursday those claims will be investigated.

The statement released by UEFA reads “The Investigatory Chamber of the independent UEFA Club Financial Control Body has today opened a formal investigation into Manchester City FC for potential breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. The investigation will focus on several alleged violations of FFP that were recently made public in various media outlets”. It is highly speculated by various sources that if the English side are found guilty, they could face Champions league ban next year.

The club responded immediately on their website by posting an official statement regarding the matter. The club called the allegations entirely false and welcomed the investigation calling it “an opportunity to bring to an end the speculation resulting from the illegal hacking and out of context publication of City emails”.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has re-iterated his faith in the club by stating “I think the club made their statement yesterday, I can’t add more than that. The club is open, so hopefully it can finish as soon as possible and Uefa can decide what it sees. I said last season I trust a lot what the club has done because I know them. Hopefully they can solve it as soon as possible”.

Amidst the FFP controversy, Pep Guardiola has been linked with Italian champions Juventus. As per a report from Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Pep Guardiola has verbally agreed to take over the Italian side this summer. The rumour has been republished on most British newspapers including the Mirror and the Express but the entire scenario is far-fetched with the Catalan manager contracted to the Etihad side until 2021.
