Man City’s Sterling & Parris win the FWA player of the year awards
Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling was declared the Football Writers Association (FWA) Player of the year after securing 62% votes – 100 votes more than Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.
The English winger has scored 17 goals and bagged 10 assists so far for Pep Guardiola’s side in the Premier League to help Manchester City close in on an unprecedented domestic treble. After the Carabao cup triumph in January, the Citizens are a point ahead of second placed Liverpool in the Premier League and have booked the FA Cup final spot against Watford at Wembley.
Despite his stunning campaign for Manchester City, Sterling was overlooked for the PFA Player of the Year and finished runner-up to Liverpool’s Van-Dijk but the City ace was rewarded with the PFA Young Player of the Year award as he was only 23 years old at the start of the campaign, which made him eligible for the accolade. However, unlike the PFA, FWA has chosen the charismatic Manchester City star for football’s oldest individual award.
“Raheem Sterling is a player of style and a man of substance.
More than 70 years ago Charles Buchan, one of the founding fathers of the Footballer Writers Association, suggested there be an award presented to the player who by “precept and example” is considered the Footballer of the Year.
Raheem Sterling is an exemplar of the talent and values our founding fathers sought to reward when they established the FWA in 1947.Raheem didn’t set out to be a leader, but he is setting examples in society and in the game which the world is following with interest.”
FWA chair Carrie Brown praised Sterling for his amazing season
His impressive form on-pitch has caught the eyes of football fans world-wide. Off the field, Sterling stood up courageously against racism for which the winger has deservingly received lots of praise from the fans and media alike.
Raheem Sterling became the first player from Manchester City since the 1960s to win the FWA Player of the Year award. Man City stars were overlooked in the past despite winning the Premier League title thrice in this decade.
In the Women’s game, Man City’s Nikita Parris won the FWA Player of the year award by 1 vote beating Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema who won the PFA Player of the Year Award.
