Man City’s transfer business in the last two years indicates the club won’t over-spend
Man City finished the 2018-19 season with an unprecedented domestic treble and, in the process, defended their Premier League crown successfully. Their success on the pitch has translated to a calm, composed and a well-planned transfer strategy outside the pitch.
While the initial years of the Sheikh Mansoor era began with big-money moves for players like Robinho & Tevez, Man City’s transfer policy has evolved over the years with UEFA seemingly targeting the English Champions at the excuse of Financial Fair Play even though there are many other clubs racking up debt.
Khaldoon Al-Mubarak, Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano have devised a transfer strategy and are clearly sticking to it. By walking away from moves for Fred, Alexis Sanchez and Jorginho, they have sent out a clear message they won’t over-spend for any player.
Last year, Manchester City spent less than €70m while their rivals Liverpool spent over €150m. It is a clear signal that Man City will go after players who are valued at the right price and want to play for arguably the World’s best manager – Pep Guardiola.
With this transfer window coming to a close in less than a fortnight, Man City have already snapped up two excellent players – Rodri and Angelino for £63m and £10m respectively.
Even though Kompany left the club at the end of last season, Pep Guardiola’s recent statement seems to indicate he is happy with his squad and wouldn’t rush to make a deal for Harry Maguire who is valued at £90m. Pep could rely on Fernandinho or the youth academy for the fourth centre-back as City aim to defend the domestic crown yet again.
With clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool struggling to make a deal for a top quality player and clubs such as Manchester United having to pay huge wages to convince good players to join their side, Man City are calmly signing players who would improve their squad while clearly not over-spending and making a fuss about it.
On and off the pitch, the skyblues of Manchester are setting new standards.
