Manchester turns blue on derby day as Man City comfortably beat United 2-0
With all eyes on Manchester for the huge derby, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City showed their superiority in a straightforward 2-0 win over their neighbours. Manchester United started the first 20 minutes strong and resilient. Ole set his team up with 5 defenders at the back and pace upfront to break when they win the ball. As we have witnessed very often this season, Manchester City found a way with their slick passing to wear the opposition down to penetrate their defence and win the game over the course of an hour and a half.
Vincent Kompany was having a tough time in the first few minutes against the quick Rashford and the City skipper picked up a yellow for stopping the youngster on a break. Rashford faded as the match went on and the Man City captain started to get the better of the English attacker. In-from Raheem Sterling created the first real chance for City when he cut inside and went for a shot that got deflected of Smalling. The lack of power in the shot gave De Gea the time to make a routine save.
Ederson was City’s best performer along with Bernardo Silva in the first half. The City keeper was called into action on a counter from United after Bernardo Silva’s powerful shot was punched out by De Gea. Lingard’s nicely weighed pass to Rashford was cut off really well by the rushing Brazilian keeper. Rashford tried to score from long-range when he spotted Ederson off the line. The shot dipped at the end but missed the target.
Fernandinho bossed the midfield by making crucial interceptions and tackles but unfortunately had to be taken off in the second half after he picked up an injury. He was replaced by Sane who moved to the left allowing Sterling to play on the right and Bernardo Silva moved to the midfield.
Gundagon passed the ball to Bernardo who cut inside and then beat Shaw to get his shot off. The shot was down low at the bottom right corner and De Gea was beaten at his near post. Bernardo’s brilliance broke the deadlock at Old Trafford. The big game player scored on his 100th appearance for Man City.
Aguero came close to extending City’s lead and the Argentine’s strike had De Gea well beaten but the post denied City a second. United came close to finding an equaliser on the other end with Rashford’s cross reaching Lingard who miskicked it.
Substitute Leroy Sane gave City the much needed breathing space on a counter. Pogba’s freekick hit the wall and Kompany managed to feed Sterling who dribbled forward with pace and released the German who made the run towards his left. Sane’s powerful shot couldn’t be stopped by De Gea at his near post and the score was 2-0.
Man City held on to secure a deserving 2-0 win and move to the top of the Premier League table with 89 points. There are just three games to go in the season and unlike Man City who have their fate in their own hands in the title race, Man United are close to missing the Champions League next season if results elsewhere don’t go their way.
