Why Everton should target Eintracht Frankfurt’s Sébastien Haller
Everton have struggled to find a top-class striker after the departure of Romelu Lukaku in 2017. Everton brought back Wayne Rooney and offered him £150,000 a week but the former Manchester United man, who made a name for himself in an Everton shirt when he was just 18 years old, failed to roll back the years and left in 2018 after a dismal campaign.
Marco Silva has used Cenk Tosun, Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin as strikers this campaign but Richarlison is not naturally a striker. The 21 year old Brazilian attacker plays better on the wings and Everton should use him in his preferred position. Tosun and Calvert-Lewin are decent strikers but Everton need a top class striker to utilize the creativity of Sigurdsson, the vision of Andre Gomes, the pace of Bernard, and the amazing talent of the powerful Richarlison.
After the owners have injected fresh investment into the club, the club should aim for European qualification. Marco Silva’s men are currently ninth on the table trailing fourth placed Tottenham by 18 points. The man who could prove to be the difference for the Toffees is currently playing for Eintracht Frankfurt and that man isn’t Luka Jovic who is targeted by the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid. It is his striking partner Sébastien Haller who the Toffees should target.
The Frenchman scored for the German club 19 times this season and grabbed 12 assists in just 38 games. To top it off, he is only 24 years old and has the best years ahead of him. The 6’3 tall striker has directly been involved in a goal for every 1.25 matches he played this season. To put that into perspective, that number at the time of writing eclipses the tally of Eden Hazard who has scored a goal in every 1.38 games this season.
Eintracht Frankfurt value him close to £38 million – slightly lower than the sum Everton paid for Richarlison. Everton earned £130.8 million last campaign from the Premier League’s TV money after they finished sixth. While Everton won’t finish that high in the Premier League table this season, they still have a chance to finish in the top eight and earn more than £100 million. If the owners inject that money to make new signings, Everton can easily afford Sébastien Haller.
Marco Silva should also target a top quality central defender. Everton already have Yerry Mina in their ranks but the Columbian defender’s first season has been plagued by injuries. The Toffees will also be losing Zouma at the end of the season when his loan spell comes to an end. The French defender will be heading back to Chelsea and the West London club will decide whether they need the services of the Frenchman. Marco Silva had earlier confirmed that Everton don’t have an option to buy Zouma in the loan deal.
Despite his heroics against Arsenal, Phil Jagielka is out of contract in the summer. He is 36 years old and even if the Toffees offer him a contract, he will only be a bit-part player in the next campaign. 34 year old Leighton Baines is in the same boat as Jagielka and is out of contract this summer but it is reported that Marco Silva wants Baines to stay at Goodison park for one more year and serve as back-up to Lucas Digne.
Everton have also been linked with Real Sociedad’s central defender Diego Llorente who can be prised away for the Spanish club for £25 million despite his £43 million release clause.
