Wolves potentially seal seventh spot and might be set for the Europa League next season
After Wolves brushed Arsenal aside with a thumping win, their next match was a different type of challenge against relegated side Fulham who have won all of their last three matches. Scott Parker’s side had most of the ball but didn’t create good chances. Wolves were too good on the counter and Fulham were lucky to go into the half-time break at 0-0. The home side eventually managed to break the deadlock in the 75th minute.
Diogo Jota was the star of the show as he kept terrifying Fulham’s defence with his pace and skills through out the game. The Portuguese attacker should have been awarded a free-kick early when he was brought down just outside the box. A few minutes later, he was rightly booked for simulation when Jota went down too easily without any contact from Cyrus Christie.
Wolves sat back and every time they won the ball, they looked dangerous. Jiminez sprinted down the right and passed the ball to Jota whose left-footed shot was just wide. The two Wolves strikers combined a few times and Jota thrice missed the target by a thin margin.
Fulham had the chance to open the scoring with their top goalscorer Mitrovic. Ryan Sessegnon picked Mitrovic in the box with a good pass and the Serbian striker’s shot was off-target and flew over the bar. Wolves full-back Jonny’s shot from distance got blocked by a Fulham defender and the rebound from Doherty went in but the flag was correctly raised for offside.
Doherty combined with Moutinho and then flashed down the right hand side before sending the ball into the box that was finished fantastically with a first-time strike by Dendoncker and finally, the home fans could breath at the Molineux. Fulham never looked like grabbing an equalizer and Wolves kept pressing for the second.
As the game was coming to an end, Jota had the chance to extend Wolves’ lead but his sweetly struck half-volley hit the cross-bar. Jota was easily our man of the match and was incredibly unlucky to not score in this game. On another day, he could have scored a hat-trick. The game ended 1-0 and Wolves travel next to Anfield to take on Liverpool and will play a part in the incredible title-race.
With the seventh spot now potentially sealed barring a Leicester City miracle, Nuno’s side have a chance of qualifying for the Europa League if Manchester City beat Watford in the FA Cup final.
