DISGUSTING: Liverpool fans throw locals into fountain and assault hotel employees in Barcelona
BARCELONA: Ahead of their UEFA Champions League semi-final fixture against FC Barcelona, hundreds of Liverpool supporters gathered at the SQUARE to unveil banners, sing songs and support their club. However, as time progressed, some of the fans who were in an upbeat mode started getting violent on the locals.
A section of travelling Liverpool supporters were filmed throwing locals into a fountain including an elderly and the other Liverpool supporters gathered around did not condemn this disgusting act but instead continued singing Liverpool chants. Some of the fans were found to be laughing at the victim when an oriental man earlier thrown into the fountain was racially stereotyped. SHAMEFUL!
To control the situation, Barcelona police arrived at the scene and moved the Liverpool supporters out of the square. Some Liverpool supporters at the scene called the action of the Barcelona police as an ‘overreaction’ but in all reality, these supporters were present at the SQUARE when the incident happened. They sang songs but refused to condemn the action of the violent fans. The police maintained their calm and did their duty despite the aggressive Liverpool fans throwing various objects at them including beer cans at them.
Mundo Deportivo reported that six Liverpool hooligans were arrested by the Barcelona police for staging riots and aggressions in the Plaça Reial. Two hotel staff were reportedly injured and required medical attention while two others suffered bruises.
The Spanish daily also confirmed that Mossos d’Esquadra – the autonomous police force of Catalonia have deployed enough number of troops around the stadium for the semi-final fixture to prevent any further disgusting aggression of the Liverpool supports on the local public.
Liverpool fans are not new to being violent and most recently, a 9 year Chelsea supported needed medical attention after a home fan had allegedly threw a flare from the upper Anfield Road stand into the area where the away supporters were seated. Last year, they had pelted objects on a bus carrying the Manchester City team members and support staff for the Champions League quarter final match to the Anfield stadium. This is the third violent act of the Liverpool fans that has been caught on camera in the span of a year.
Both Manchester United and Manchester City supporters have visited the SQUARE at Barcelona to support their teams in the past. Notably, supporters of both teams have maintained their conduct and there was no intervention from the Barcelona police.
