After getting beaten by Arsenal convincingly, Manchester United’s next hurdle was at Molineux stadium against Wolverhampton Waderers in the FA cup quarter-final. Wolves were happy to frustrate Manchester United in the first half sitting deep and waiting to break on the counter. Amidst the horrible weather of rain and cold wind, the home fans failed to disappoint. The electricity in the stadium was at it’s peak and drove the organized home team willing to execute Nuno’s masterplan.

Both Ruddy and Sergio Romero made routine saves of Rashford and Ruben Neves’ efforts. The entire first half was close coming to an uneventful end despite both clubs having penalty shouts at the opposite ends of the pitch, which were rightly waved away by referee Martin Atkinson. Right before half time, Ruben Neves played Diogo Jota through on goal and Romero made a superb save to deny Wolves the lead at half-time.

Wolves had the best chance in the first half and in the second half, they were growing in confidence and the home fans could feel that the opening goal was coming. Romero made another excellent save by deflecting an on-target header from Raul Jiminez’ over the bar. Wolves started to ask more questions of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United by calling his goal keeper into action time and time again. João Moutinho who was the central figure in orchestrating the Wolves attacks fired a shot at Romero who made yet another save to keep the Red Devils still in the game.

Finally, Raul Jiminez broke the deadlock whose initial shot was saved by the Argentine goal keeper but the forward scored from the rebound. Diego Jota, who should have scored in the first half, extended Wolves’ lead. Jota broke away on the counter that started with a United corner. He beat Luke Shaw before slamming the ball low into the bottom corner of the goal. Referee Martin Atkinson showed a red to Victor Lindelöf for his rash tackle on Jota. Upon review from VAR, the red was downgraded to yellow.

Marcus Rashford scored late in stoppage time but it was too late as Wolves held on to a famous 2-1 win over Manchester United knocking them out of the FA Cup. Nuno Espírito Santo couldn’t have got his tactics better and Ole’s United have been beaten twice this week after the fantastic comeback against PSG in the Champions League.
