Barcelona are the La Liga Champions of 2018/19
Lionel Messi scored the solitary goal in Barcelona’s victory against Levante to seal their 25th win of the season. The win confirms that Barcelona are now Champions of Spain for the second consecutive time.
Ernesto Valverde left Messi out of the starting XI with the thought of having him fresh for the Champions League semi-final fixture against Liverpool. The Argentine star was introduced at half-time and Messi eventually broke the dead-lock at the 62nd minute by scoring his 24th goal of the season. It was befitting that their greatest ever player scored the goal that sealed the title.
The win marks a few milestones:
- Barcelona have won 4 of the last 5 La Liga titles
- This season’s title win is the first for Messi as Barcelona captain
- The victory marks Lionel Messi’s 10th title as a Barcelona player – the highest in the history of the club
Now, Barcelona switch attention to the Champions League after failing to win the title for 4 years and painfully watched their El-Classico rivals Real Madrid lift the trophy. Up next, they face Liverpool who are competing with Manchester City for the domestic title.
