Everton outclass Burnley to win their last home game
Everton won their last home game of the season with a straightforward 2-0 victory over Sean Dyche’s Burnley to extend their winning run at home to four and marked their fourth consecutive cleansheet. Marco Silva’s side are starting to play with the style that could potentially see them seal a spot in Europe next season if they miss out on the seventh spot in the current campaign with just a game to go.
The Toffees started the game on fire winning a corner in the second minute. Burnley were facing sustained attacks from Everton. Midfielder Gueye lost his marker to drill a low shot that got deflected away from goal.
Richarlison combined with Calvert-Lewin to open the scoring for Toffees. The Brazilian released Calvert-Lewin down the right and when the ball came back to him, he launched a shot 20 yards from goal which went in with a deflection of the Clarets captain Ben Mee. The goal panel confirmed it was Mee’s own goal.
Three minutes later, a very confident Lucas Digne smashed a powerful shot 25 yards from goal and the Burnley keeper Tom Heaton managed to only push it in the path of Everton’s captain Saemus Coleman who headed it in and extended the Toffees lead to two.
Burnley struggled to create clear chances and threatened the game just twice in the whole half. Brady’s cross to the far-post was headed into the back of the net by Barnes but the offside flag rightly came up. Digne was caught napping for the only time in the match who was otherwise brilliant throughout the game.
Westwood picked up a yellow a couple of minutes later for a dirty challenge on Morgan Schneiderlin.
Bernard was highly influential in this match and in the 43rd minute, the Brazilian showboated some of his skills in the box to set-up Sigurdsson who lashed it shot over the bar.
Everton were cruising at half-time with more than 70% possession and registered 12 shots.
Burnley started the second half better and looked a bit more dangerous from set-pieces. Richarlison picked up a knock and had to be replaced in the 49th minute. Walcott came on in the Brazilian’s place.
The Clarets couldn’t break Everton’s defence and managed to register only five shots through out the game. Johann Gudmundsson came close to pulling one back but his volley was off-target and rising. Chris Wood’s tame shot on target was the only trouble Pickford had to deal with.
Burnley should have had a penalty when Vydra was pushed to the floor by Michael Keane. The referee didn’t point to the spot and game went on.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a few chances to extend Everton’s lead in the second half and the game finished 2-0. Burnley have already confirmed safety and will play the last game at home.
Everton will travel to London to face Tottenham Hotspur for their last game of the campaign. The win marks Everton’s fifth win of the last five and the future looks bright for the blue side of Merseyside.
