Leicester City fight back to earn a point against Chelsea
Frank Lampard’s wait for his first win as Chelsea boss continues after his dream return to the Stamford Bridge outfit. The third professional game for Chelsea under their new boss this campaign ended in a 1-1 draw against Leicester City.
Olivier Giroud returned to the starting XI after losing his spot to youngster Tammy Abraham in Chelsea’s season opener against Manchester United. Mason Mount dispossessed Wilfried Ndidi and gave Chelsea a seventh minute lead with a powerful shot that beat Kasper Schmeichel in goal.
Chelsea made a bright start to the game despite having played a midweek game against Liverpool for 120 minutes in the Super Cup Final.
The Stamford Bridge outfit couldn’t keep up that pace and Leicester City grew into the game in the second half. Wilfred Ndidi made up for his error in the first half by heading home the equaliser from a corner taken by Maddison in the 67th minute. Lampard’s decision to prefer zonal-marking for corners was questioned by Arsenal legend Ian Wright.
“I’m not sure why he’s not going man-to-man at set-pieces because people will see they’re vulnerable in that respect. You saw it there.”
– Ian Wright
“He’s (Ndidi) standing in an area where you’d much rather someone pick him up. ‘When you’ve got a running jump, if the ball is good, it’s very difficult to stop somebody. And the ball was fantastic from (James) Maddison.”
Leicester City had opportunities to pick all three points but James Maddison and Jamie Vardy failed to capitalise by firing off-target. Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa made a remarkable save off Youri Tielemans in the dying minutes to earn Chelsea a solitary point.
