Man City’s record signing Mahrez threatens to leave – Sancho eyed as replacement
Manchester City spent £60 million on Riyad Mahrez to bring him from Leicester City to the Etihad stadium. The Algerian has failed to recapture the form that helped Leicester City win the Barclays Premier League in the 2015-16 season. Despite making 42 appearances in his first season, he is openly complaining about the lack of opportunities during training.
The 28 year old has scored 11 goals in all competitions with most of them coming against lower league opposition in the FA Cup and Carabao cup. Sterling and Bernardo Silva’s impressive form has limited the Algerian winger’s number of starts in the Premier League to just 13 even though he came off the bench 13 other times.
Mahrez failed to make a case for himself when he missed a penalty in City’s crucial match against Liverpool at the Anfield stadium in the Premier League. He also hasn’t scored many goals against top quality opposition this season. Pep Guardiola started Mahrez in the Champions league first leg fixture against Tottenham and the attacker failed to make any significant impact in the match which ended in a 1-0 loss for City.
Pep Guardiola has always maintained that the Algerian trains well and it makes him sad that he couldn’t start Mahrez more often. Both Bernardo Silva and Sterling’s excellent form has made them contenders for the PFA Player of the Year award. With Mahrez unhappy and Sane having not extended his current contract, the club is considering a bid for their former youth academy player Jadon Sancho who is having a fantastic season in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund.
Man City believe their 15% sell-on clause could come in handy to reduce Dortmund’s £100 million valuation of the 19 year old who Man City sold to Borussia Dortmund for just £8 million. At any cost, Man City do not want the highly rated youngster to move to their cross-town rivals Manchester United who are also interested in the English winger.
