Manchester United need Julian Brandt but Ed Woodward isn’t pursuing the winger
Julian Brandt was the star of the show in Bayer Leverkusen’s 6-1 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt. The German winger has returned to form under new boss Peter Bosz and has pocketed 6 goals and 11 assists this season in the Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund are leading the race to sign the 23 year old winger who can play on both sides of the wing. The release clause in the winger’s contract with Bayer Leverkusen makes him a value buy at only €25 million.
Julian Brandt replaced Son Heung-Min in the Bayer Leverkusen starting XI after Son’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur in 2015 and has performed impressively for the German side since.
With Martial and Lingard struggling to be consistent on the pitch, Brandt would be the perfect signing for Manchester United. For some one his height, Brandt is not just strong but quick and has a fantastic first-touch. He would offer the fluidity Man United are missing up-front.
At 23, Brandt is nearing the peak of his career and Manchester United should target him instead of Sancho who is over-priced at £100m. Sancho has the talent to be better than Brandt in the future but spending 100 million on one player doesn’t make a lot of sense especially when Manchester United need four or five key signings in other areas.
United’s most consistent midfielder Ander Herrera is running out of contract and hasn’t agreed to a new deal. To find a player of similar quality, Man United might be forced to spend £40 to 50 million unless they convince Adrien Rabiot, who is a free-agent in the summer, to join the Old Trafford outfit.
Manchester United’s biggest head-ache is in defence. Ashley Young is 33 years old and is far from the player he once was. Chris Smalling hasn’t impressed this season and Luke Shaw & Bailey’s consecutive injuries are a concern for the Red Devils.
The problems at Old Trafford can’t be addressed in one transfer window. Ed Woodward probably knows that. In the past, he tried to bring the likes of Bale with bids around £90 million & failed. He succeeded in bringing Sanchez to the club but everyone knows what followed.
It’s not the over-priced big names Man United should target but instead it should be the good-quality players who come at the right price and can be employed by Ole in his setup. Julian Brandt fits the criteria.
Signing Brandt for £25 million would be a good start to focus on other key signings in defence and midfield. Hopefully, Ed doesn’t repeat his old mistakes by going for Sancho. Even if he succeeds, he would have most likely addressed one issue and left Man United with average players in key areas of the pitch, thanks to the financial strain a deal for Sancho would bring.
