Free-scoring City thrash Schalke 7-0
After a week full of surprises in the Champions League with Ajax, Man Utd and Porto defeating Real Madrid, PSG and Roma, Schalke could be forgiven for beleiving in a miracle at the Etihad. Manchester City under Pep Guardiola are ruthlessly aggressive and Shalke’s hope of starting a comeback faded when Bruma with an arm extended unnecessarily brough down Bernardo Silva inside the penalty box. Schalke had two penalties awarded to them in the reverse fixture but in Machester, the penalty decision went agaist them at a pivotal point. Sergio Aguero scored from the spot to give City a 1-0 lead after hitting the post a few minutes earlier.
The Premier League’s leading goal scorer of this season showed why he is one of the most feared strikers in Europe when he grabbed his second of the night by scoring through the legs of Fahrmann with a powerful shot from close range. Shalke’s youth academy graduate Sane was the man of the match for scoring City’s third and setting up Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden on a night when City equalled the record for most goals scored in a knockout game of the Champions League.
Gabriel Jesus scored the seventh after coming on as a substitute. Last year’s runners-up of Bundesliga were no match for the EPL champions who could have scored a couple more goals. VAR slowed the game after being called upon multiple times and UEFA has work to do in that aspect to ensure smooth progression of the game. Schalke are not doing domestically well this campaign but scoring 10 past them over two legs to progress with a 10-2 aggregate scoreline only reflects how ruthless City are. With Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and PSG already out, City should fancy themselves this year to go all the way.
