PSG awarded Ligue 1 title; Marseille and Rennes in Champions League
The French Professional Football League (LFP) have awarded PSG the Ligue 1 title after cancelling the 2019-20 season a few days back due to COVID 19.
The club from Paris had a healthy 12 point lead at the top of the table when the league was declared canceled. PSG were awarded the title by the LFP on a points-per-game basis.
LFP president Nathalie Boy de la Tour said: “We have brought an end to the 2019-20 season. PSG win the Ligue 1 title, while Lorient the Ligue 2.”
This is the Parisians’ seventh French title in eight years. Amiens and Toulouse have been relegated from Ligue 1 while Lorient and Lens have been promoted on the same points-per-game basis. Marseille and Rennes have been awarded the Champions League spots.
Ligue 1 is the second top-flight European football league to be canceled after the Dutch Eredivisie. However, the Eredivisie ended without crowning a Champion and no promotion or relegation.
