Watford reach FA Cup final by beating Wolves in a 5 goal thriller
The second semi-final of the FA Cup between Wolves and Watford had all the excitement you could ask for in a football game. Wolves were the surprise package in this year’s FA cup and had knocked both Liverpool and Manchester United out of the tournament. They came in as slight favourites for the FA cup semi-final and until the end of the first 90 minutes, it looked like it was Wolves who were going to progress.
Watford had plenty of the ball and dominated the game but against the run of play, Wolves inched ahead with a goal from Matt Doherty in the 36th minute. Wolves took a corner short and surprised Watford. Diogo Jota crossed the ball to the far post and Doherty nodded it in to open the scoring for Wolves.
Jota was at it again in the second half. The Portuguese attacker did well to create space and crossed the ball to Jimenez who couldn’t finish. Wolves doubled their lead in the 62nd minute from a set-piece. Moutinho passed the ball to Doherty who chipped it into the box. Raul Jiminez chested the ball to control it and smashed it into the back of the net, beating Gomes. With a 2-0 deficit, it seemed like Wolves had a foot in the final of the FA Cup.
The complexion of the match changed when Watford introduced Deulofeu in the 66th minute. Watford earned a throw in the 79th minute and Holebas launched a long throw that fell at Deulofeu’s feet. The former Barcelona attacker took a sublime first touch and curled the ball into the top corner to initiate a Watford comeback with a truly amazing goal.
In the stoppage time, Troy Deeney was brought down by Dendoncker and referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot. The decision was checked by VAR and the penalty stood. Deeney lashed the ball into the net, beating Ruddy to break the hearts of the Wolves fans and take the game to extra time.
As the first half of extra time was coming to and end, Gerard Deulofeu sent the Watford fans to cloud nine by finishing a brilliant move. He exchanged passes with Andre Gray and then beat Coady with another brilliant first touch before rolling the ball into the bottom corner to complete a fantastic come back. Towards the middle of the second half of extra time, Deulofeu seemed to have twisted his ankle and had to be replaced. Watford held on to their lead until the final whistle and secured their FA cup final birth.
Gerard Deulofeu turned the match upside down with a brilliant performance and helped the Hornets complete an incredible comeback at the Wembley. Watford will now face Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May. Man City beat Brighton a day earlier to secure their FA Cup final birth with a solitary goal from Gabriel Jesus.
