Tottenham Hotspur make a winning start at their new stadium
Tottenham Hotspur ended their 5 match win-less run in the Premier League by winning their very first match in their new stadium against Crystal Palace. Tottenham Hotspur’s new £1 billion stadium is startling and their fans rightfully wanted to mark the historic night with a victory.
Palace started the game with the intention of sitting deep and frustrating Spurs. Son had an early chance which missed the target narrowly. Spurs dominated the possession and came close to scoring in the 17th minute and Guiata denied Christian Eriksen by making a fine save. The first half finished goalless.
With Daniel Levy among the 59,215 in attendance, it was the South Korean Son Heung-min who scored the first goal for Tottenham Hotspur in the new stadium. Son cut inside and his shot from just inside the box got deflected and Guaita had no chance of saving it. Christian Eriksen doubled Spurs’ lead by picking up a loose ball ahead of the Crystal Palace defenders.
The win takes Tottenham to the third spot after 32 games. Spurs, with 63 points, are a point ahead of local rivals Arsenal who have a game in hand. Elsewhere, Chelsea beat Brighton 3-0 to keep the pressure on their London rivals for a top 4 finish.
Tottenham face Manchester City next in their new home stadium and the mouth watering clash should have started giving goosebumps to the Spurs’ faithful. The stadium was built for mega-matches in the Champions League and Tottenham fans have a chance to experience it so early in their new stadium against the English champions.
