Foden gets first league start in Man City’s 2-0 victory over Cardiff

Pep Guardiola started 18 year old Phil Foden in Man City’s midweek clash against Cardiff City. The defending champions scored twice in the first half to seal a win at home and reclaim top spot. The Catalan manager rested many important players keeping in mind the upcoming FA cup semi final clash against Brighton this weekend.

Man City showed no sign of nervousness despite needing a win to wrestle back pole position from Liverpool. In the sixth minute, Kevin De Bruyne sprinted down the left and blasted the ball from narrow angle to open the scoring for Man City. The midfielder bossed the game and created chance after chance that out-of-form Gabriel Jesus kept missing.

Zinchenko picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Kyle Walker in the middle of the first half. Leroy Sane made it two for the champions after Gabriel Jesus superbly deflected the cross with his chest towards the German winger’s stronger left side.

Man City had a total of 27 shots with 11 on target and if it was not for Cardiff’s goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, Phil Foden would have grabbed a couple of goals and Man City could have hit them for a dozen goals. That’s how good the Citizens were on a cold night. Cardiff registered just one shot on target and Ederson was a quite spectator for most of the match.

Cardiff City came close to beating Chelsea a few days back but today, they were not even close to competing with Man City. That’s how good Pep Guardiola’s side have been this season. With 80 points on board, Man City are back at the top of the Premier League table with only 6 games to go.
