Newcastle United pick up their first win of the season beating UCL finalists Tottenham
Steve Bruce’s new-look Newcastle United beat Champions League finalists – Tottenham Hostspur 1-0 to claim their first win of the season. After VAR saved Tottenham from losing all three points against Man City at the Etihad with two dubious calls, the north London side were finally at the receiving end of a controversial decision that didn’t go in their favour.
Despite Tottenham dominating the possession, Spurs were unable to unlock Newcastle’s defence in the final third. Newcastle United found a short period of dominance and managed to build from the back with a series of passes. The move gained significance when Matt Ritchie found Atsu on the left side forty yards from goal. Atsu’s chipped cross reached the Brazilian striker Joelinton who curled it past Hugo Lloris to score his first goal in the Premier League.
Tottenham’s first real chance of the game fell to their number 7 – Son Heung Min. Kyle Walker-Pieters’ cross to the far post was volleyed by the South Korean but Dubravka was equal to the challenge and parried it away. Lucas Moura had the chance to equalize for Spurs when the first half was coming to an end. Dubravka came out to meet a cross from Kane but missed it completely and the ball reached Moura who only managed to fire his shot wide.
Tottenham put in a lacklustre performance and simply lacked the vision to carve open the Newcastle United defense. Steve Bruce’s men were happy to sit back and defend against the UCL finalists. Harry Kane had a quiet game going by his high standards up until a a challenge made by Lascelles.
The English striker was brought down by Jamaal Lascelles inside the box. The Newcastle defender came across Kane and took him down, while falling over but some how, VAR failed to award Spurs a penalty.
Mouricio Pochettino brought-on Christian Eriksen to try and change the course of the game. The midfielder played a brilliant diagonal ball to Sissoko who found Lucas Moura in the middle with his cross. The Brazilian fired his shot over! Deep in stoppage time, Harry Kane failed to make proper connection with the ball from six yards out when Sissoko clipped the it back to the centre of the box.
It’s a huge result for Newcastle United and a strange game where Tottenham with 80% possession managed to register only 2 shots on target against Newcastle’s 3.
