West Ham Utd are poised to win relegation battle by peaking at the end
David Moyes has helped West Ham United reach their peak at the right end of the season. The club struggled under Manuel Pellegrini in the early part of the season and most fans were concerned the change of guard came too late.
David Moyes lead West Ham a couple of years back and saved them from relegation. History may repeat itself this season. The Hammers have lost only once in their last 4 matches. Against local rivals Chelsea, West Ham scored thrice and came back from behind to pick up a 3-2 victory.
That marked the turn of their season when it seemed like the Hammers were heading for a drop after having lost three of their previous games. Against a spirited Newcastle United, West Ham shared their spoils and after a lackluster performance against Burnley, they bounced back straight away to smash Norwich City 4-0.
Michael Antonio has been the star of their revival with the former Manchester United man scoring all four goals against Norwich. He was also instrumental in West Ham’s crucial 3-2 win over Chelsea.
West Ham have failed in a lot of games as a collective unit. The biggest worry for them has been the performances of their record signing Sebastian Haller. The former Eintracht Frankfurt striker, who was bought by West Ham for €50m, has scored only 7 times this season in the Premier League.
With Haller struggling, Michael Antonio’s return to form at the right time gives the Hammers hope of staying afloat. A win in their next game against Watford would all but end their relegation worries as the Hammers also enjoy a vastly superior goal difference.
The Hammers replaced Moyes with Manuel Pellegrini after just 6 months despite the Scott saving them from relegation in the 2017-18 season. David Moyes has been given an 18-month contract this season and it looks like he will be offered a meager £40 million transfer kitty to improve the squad next season.
With a huge stadium and a large fan base, West Ham United don’t deserve to go down but to avoid being in the same position again next season, they need to stop making the same mistakes in the transfer window. Having spent relatively well in the last 2 seasons, it is understandable they don’t want to spend more in this transfer window.
However, that should be a concern for David Moyes who has to work with struggling players with a huge price tag even though most of them were not signed by the Scott. Will eighteen months and £40 million be enough for Moyes to rebuild West Ham’s squad? Only time will tell but for the moment, it seems like he has saved them once again from relegation.
