Real Madrid replace Solari with ex-boss Zidane
It was highly speculated that Jose Mourinho would replace Solari in the summer but successive defeats to Barcelona and elimination at the hands of Ajax in the Champions League has brought Solari’s campaign to a premature end. Santiago Solari is the second boss to be sacked this season by Real Madrid after Julen Lopetegui got his marching orders in October.
Zidane, whose name was heavily linked with Juventus, has been named as the replacement. The Frenchman enjoyed successful spells at Real Madrid both as a player and Manager. He won three successive Champions League titles with a star studded team that included Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real Madrid’s statement read: “The board of directors of Real Madrid, meeting today, Monday, March 11, 2019, has decided to terminate the contract that linked Santiago Solari with the club as coach of the first team.
“Real Madrid appreciates the work done by Santiago Solari and the commitment and loyalty he has always shown to what is his home.
“The board of directors has also agreed the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as the new coach of Real Madrid with immediate incorporation for the remainder of the season and the next three, until June 30, 2022.”
Real Madrid President Florentino Perez commented “The best manager in the world has rejoined the club. Our destinies are once again united”.
Despite having an incredible first spell, Zidane faces an uphill task of reversing Real Madrid’s fortunes both off and on-field. The first job will be to unite the dressing room and if reports from BBC are to be believed, club captain Sergio Ramos has fallen out with Fiorentino Perez.
Barcelona lead Real Madrid by 12 points in the La Liga and unless the Catalan club slump to a poor run of results, Real Madrid are resigned to finishing trophyless at the end of the season. The French boss is widely expected to carryout a summer overhaul. It remains to be seen if the magnificent midfield can weave his magic again at Real Madrid as their manager.
